BODMAS Concept for Class 5 Math

I recently conducted a class for class five students, they were very good at solving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Well I thought to twist the problem and asked very simple question: what is the value of 2 + 2 ÷ 2 = ?... few students said two , few said three...

Well! I know this question is little confusing if we do not know order of mathematical operations, like if there is a sum which involves addition and multiplication then which operation to perform first and so on...

Alright! Today I am going to explain about this concept. Let me introduce a most common word called BODMAS, which explains all mathematical order of function... let us first understand meaning of BODMAS:

B − Bracket
O − of or order
D − Division
M − Multiplication
A − Addition
S − Subtraction

In BODMAS, the first priority goes to bracket, it means you need to consider bracket first and solve problem given in the bracket, then we have of (multiply) or Order. Examples are: 2 of 50 or 63 etc.

Next we have Division and Multiplication, both these operators have equal order, if in a problem you have multiplication and division both; then solve the equation from left to right.

i.e. 2 ÷ 2 x 3
= 1 x 3
= 3 ( it solves the very first problem )

Similarly Addition and subtraction have same priority and in this case also, follow left to right order, whichever operations come first. Let us bring some examples from peezbowl.com:

Example 1: 505 − 506 ÷ 11 (I have taken this example from peezbowl.com)
Answer: As we have already discussed, division have more precedence over subtraction, so we will perform division first:
so, 505 − 506 ÷ 11
= 505 − 46 = 459 is the answer

Example 2: Calculate the following: (55 ÷ 11) x (11 − 9) ? [Taken from class 5 − peezbowl.com]
Answer: We need to work on brackets first, let us see how to solve this:
(55 ÷ 11) x (11 − 9)
= 5 x 2 [solved both the bracket numbers]
= 10 is the answer

Example 3: (600 ÷ 15 + 195) − 155 ? [Taken from class 5 − peezbowl.com]
Answer: without explaining much, let us see how to solve this:
(600 ÷ 15 + 195) − 155
= (40 + 195) − 155 [bracket and division]
= 235 − 155
= 80 is the answer
