Question: Learn addition of two fractions having different numerator and denominator based on the examples shown in the answer ?

Answer: So far, we have discussed fraction concepts for class four students; there we have worked on fractions where we had common denominators. Let us understand how to work on fractions where we need to deal with different denominators. Let us start with a simple example:

In this case we have different numerator and denominator. Let us not consider the numerator much at this point of time. Let us focus on denominator. First of all understand what this fraction says.

We need to add two third of one object with one fourth of other object. Let us see this by a diagram:

In the first picture we have color parts representing two third portions of the overall picture and in the second picture, the colored part represents one fourth of the overall object.

Now to solve this addition; let us first make both the denominators equal, to do this we need to multiply both the denominators to number which will bring the denominators equal. In our case denominators are 3 and 4. Let us see below:

     3 x 4 = 12
     4 x 3 = 12

Now, we know that 12 can be the common denominator in both the fraction. To do so we need to multiply 2/3 to 3 (to both numerator and denominator) and multiply ΒΌ to 3 (both numerator and denominator). Let us see how it looks like:

However, if you notice closely, multiplying 2/3 to 4/4 will not changing the fraction value, as 4/4 is one and multiplying any number with one will not change the original value.

Now, its easy to calculate the fraction, as we know how to perform fraction addition on equal denominators in the previous link. Let us solve it:

There is one more method where you can solve fraction having different denominators. Let us solve previous example with the new method:

In this case we have multiplied numerator of first fraction with the denominator of second fraction and numerator of second numerator with denominator of first fraction then added both the numbers to calculate numerator. For denominator we simple multiplied both the denominators. Hence the final output is 11/12.
